Delaware Bay Destinations
Lewes, DE
Lewes was originally called Zwaanendael, which meant "valley of the swans" to the Dutch who settled the area in 1631. An Indian massacre wiped them out, but the town retains the distinction as "the first town in the first state."
Cape Henlopen, DE
The Nations first public lands, Cape Henlopen State Park encompasses over 3700 acres of beaches, dunes, pine forests, salt marsh, freshwater wetlands and ponds. It's home to the Great Dune, 80 feet above sea level-- the highest point on the central Atlantic coast. There's a fishing pier, which along with old military bunkers and towers (built to spot enemy ships) provides great viewing for migrating hawks and wintering seabirds, including gannets, jaegers, black-legged
kittiwakes, oldsquaw, all three scoters, and great cormorants. Piping plovers nest along the beach, and a good variety of gulls and terns are not hard to find. This is one of the most crucial sites for migrating shorebirds on the entire
Atlantic Coast of North America.
Cape Henlopen is also where Captain Kidd is said to have buried a chest full of gold in 1700, and the coast is littered with shipwrecks and tales of pirate treasure. The waters include schools of playful porpoises, dolphins, and whales.
Cape May, NJ (2-3 day only)
Cape May, New Jersey is the oldest shore resort and National Historic Landmark, a place one must experience once in their lifetime.
Located at the southern most tip of New Jersey, Cape May is described as being the mystical point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Delaware Bay. A man-made canal, created in the early 1940's, makes Cape May an island. Amazing sunrises over the Atlantic and sunsets over the Delaware cast a warm glow on the beaches of Cape May. Bird watchers flock to Cape May in hopes of sighting rare birds that rest on the peninsula before continuing south.
In 1766 Cape May began to evolve into a place where visitors would come to relax for their health and pleasure. Visitors came by steamboat from Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, and Washington. From this point on, hotels, one of the earliest being Congress Hall in 1816, ballrooms and music pavilions were built in Cape May and it became known as the "Queen of the Seaside Resorts." The Victorian Era, corresponding with the reign of Queen Victoria in England from 1839 to 1901, was
the prime influence on Cape May architecture. Today Cape May is still comprised of over 600 Victorian buildings boasting one of the largest collections in the United States.
